Hi there! I’m Parisa, a Business and Law student at UTS, and am about to start a semester of exchange at Tilburg University in the Netherlands.
In all honesty, I was never too adamant on doing exchange. It’s not that I was sure that I didn’t want to, but more so that I thought I didn’t need to do it and that I didn’t have the resources at my disposal to do it. But last year, after travelling for the first time, I realised what exchange could mean as an opportunity to travel and explore the world. I heard countless stories from my friends who had previously gone on exchange and no one had a bad thing to say about it. However, more importantly, I realised that I was fortunate enough to have the resources needed to go on exchange. I realised that it was possible to take up this opportunity at a time in my life where it is completely practical. Together with things like a HECS loan from the government and support from UTS, I decided to embark on this 6 month journey.
My exchange semester starts at the end of August and I couldn’t be more excited. I was fortunate because the planning process wasn’t too overwhelming and confusing. I felt like I more or less had the information that I needed for all steps of the process. I decided to travel for one month prior to university starting and it has already been a whirlwind. I got caught up in the biggest heatwave Europe has ever had, which was an experience in itself. I’ve already seen seven countries, and I’m eager to see and learn more about this diverse and stunning continent over the rest of the year.
Obviously, it has been a nerve-wracking process at times. The thought of living away from home for such a long period of time is daunting. Away from the familiarity of Sydney and the comfort of my own bed and my mum’s food. However, I’ve tried to use this nervousness as a further incentive to go, because I know that it will be a massive learning curve no matter how it turns out.
All in all, I still have a long way to go in this adventure. From what I’ve seen in the time that I’ve been here, I know that exchange will be the experience of a lifetime.
