Like People? Like Culture? Like Markets? Like Travel? – You’ll Like Eindhoven

I have been in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) for just over three weeks and I feel as though I am still only scratching the surface of the exchange student life.

From the moment I got here I was treated to rain. Lots of it in fact. The majority of The Netherlands is below the sea level and rain is more common than sun. However, the locals were still riding around on their bicycles completely unphased and this inspired me to do the same. Since then I have not looked back and have learnt to love the weather.

Like people?

The first week here was outstanding. I met my housemates, got a bike and set up my life in my new home. By day we familiarised ourselves with our environment and by night, with each other. The exchange student population here is enormous and full of interesting, exiting, mature and very relatable people from every corner of the globe.

Family dinners are common. Almost every night of the week really. So if you are planning on coming over here start preparing some signature dishes. Going up against the likes of the Italians, Brazilians, French and Turkish means you need to know your food to make a statement here!

Like European Culture?

Inside Eindhoven there is always something to do. The university has some sort of event on every day, time is spent with friends riding around or in a park listening to music and chatting. The huge pedestrian trip in the city centrum (centre) is lined with cafés serving delicious Dutch delicious delicacies and beautiful Belgian beer.

The student accommodation is 10 minutes at most from anywhere that you will need to go on a daily basis. The university is an easy cycle and the bar street which houses over 57 bars is so close its hard to find excuses not to go meet friends.

Like markets?

Tuesdays and Saturdays both hosts the largest markets here in Eindhoven. You can find everything from bike locks to fresh fish. They give me the opportunity to fill up my fridge with my housemates with some fresh, local and CHEAP produce for the week. Also, every third Sunday there is the ‘Feel Good Market’. An event that has music, drinks, food, arts and crafts all in once place. It is an amazing day out and there could be nothing better than after a weekend out in Belgium coming back to Eindhoven with all my friends, sharing plates of delicious food and decadent desserts followed by a cold beer and an hour or two of Frisbee.

Like Travel?

Being in a country like The Netherlands you will have endless opportunity to travel. Every weekend there is at least one large group of students going to cities in Germany, England, and Belgium or inside Holland itself.
