I am having a ball here in San Diego…a city with an array of gorgeous beaches, continuous hot days in the middle of Winter and a University filled with endless experiences.
When I was 14 years old I visited San Diego with my family. I didn’t think it would be too different being here for University, but I was definitely wrong. This time round, I’ve been exposed to a completely different insight of the city.
Living without parents and in a dorm filled with people you’re own age leaves you with no such thing as boredom. There is always something going on. My weekends are generally spent down at the beach or hanging out by the pool. My classes consist of surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and salsa dancing (as well as a few ‘real’ classes). I am really being treated with the typical ‘Cali’ lifestyle. With Mexico only a half hour away, I’m able to indulge in the most delicious Mexican food.
The college spirit at San Diego State is truly amazing. Everyone walks around campus in their SDSU jumpers, hats, t-shirts…revealing how proud they are about going to such a great school. Our basketball team is currently competing in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament. The team is amazing, finishing in the top 10 in the lead up to March Madness. Students are able to get free tickets, but they sell out really fast. For the last home game, people were waking up at 5am to wait in line in order to guarantee a seat!
The games, themselves, were incredible! All the students dress-up and cheer as loudly as possible. On the final home game, the Aztecs only just won and at the end of the game, everyone stormed the court. It was insane!
Spring Break is coming up! I’m visiting a friend in Sacramento and then we are going to LA to meet some friends. We are all going to make the journey to Santa Barbara for Deltopia, a big party which is supposed to be a lot of fun. I’m very excited!
Overall, my exchange experience has been really incredible. It has been so eye-opening and has made me truly grow-up and adapt to another culture. Although Australia isn’t too dissimilar to America, there are still many differences that I’m still getting used to. However, I am loving every moment.
